I’m sitting in the waiting room at Miami University Hospital reading Next Year in Havana, waiting… Eighteen months ago my husband was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon and Liver Cancer. The really scary part: he had no symptoms.
Let Me Take You Through Our Amazing Journey
It was early March 2017 and my husband had had a little cough for a few weeks and he had been feeling a bit run down. We were about to leave for a spring break trip to California. I urged him to go to the doctor just to see if he needed to be on an antibiotic. He did go see our family doctor who said that his lungs sounded fine but he wanted him to go for a chest x-ray just to be sure.
Thank Goodness for Amazing Doctors that Go the Extra Mile
When the radiologist read the x-ray, he said that his lungs were clear but there was a dark spot on my husband’s liver. He and our family doctor ordered a follow-up CAT scan just for precaution. The scan showed a large mass on my husband’s colon and multiple masses in my husband’s liver. We were immediately sent to an oncologist who diagnosed my husband with Stage 4 Cancer..
Needless to say, the last year and half have been a challenge. The days have been filled with doctor’s appointments, surgeries, chemotherapy, and over 40 nights in a hospital. Our family has missed trips, spent Christmas in the hospital and we have drug our teenage son to more doctors appoints that any human should ever have to go to.
We were told by one of the leading cancer hospitals in the world that we were not a surgical candidate nor would we ever be. We were basically told that my husband’s cancer had spread too far too fast for us to ever have a chance at a cure. The best we could hope for is to contain it and keep it from spreading.
Celebrating Being Cancer Free
I am excited about 2019 because my husband is now CANCER FREE! He had a third surgery on December 11th to remove the last of the tumors in his liver! Thanks goes to God who lead us to the right oncologist who lead us to the right surgeons who lead us down a path that removed all of the cancer out of my husband’s body!
While we still have a long road ahead of us, we are hopeful. I claim Jeremiah 29:11 as my life verse this year:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
May your 2019 be filled with love, peace and hope! I know that I am off to a great start. I trust you are too.
